Tooth Whitening: Is It Right for Me?
The “Cosmetic Dentistry” revolution brings consumers the newest technology and options to give you a brighter, whiter smile. Teeth whitening is also known as “teeth bleaching.” This process has a 90% success rate. Your teeth will be lightened in shade whether they are darkened from age, smoking, tea or coffee. Results do vary depending on your individual conditions. Certain conditions such a fluorosis and staining from medications such as tetracycline are more difficult to whiten.
Dr. Smith will evaluate your existing conditions prior to the bleaching appointment. He may discourage treatment if you have gum disease, sensitive teeth, leaking fillings or active decay. Existing fillings and crowns and veneers will not change shade with bleaching and may need to be remade after the bleaching is accomplished.
What Choices Do I have with Tooth Whitening?
Dr. Smith uses the LaserSmile® system which is a dental laser and a gel to whiten the teeth in the office. The procedure takes about an hour. Similar, more economical results may be obtained with a home bleaching kit which consists of custom made bleaching trays and a weaker whitening gel that is safe for home use. Home bleaching takes one to two weeks for optimum results.
What is the best for you? Only a trained, experienced dental professional like Dr. Smith can provide the best options. Call today for an appointment at Oakridge Center for Laser, cosmetic and Implant Dentistry. 408.224.1133.
The Steps to a Bright Smile
Dr. Smith uses the LaserSmile® system which is a Dental Laser and a gel to whiten the teeth in the office and takes about an hour.
On your initial appointment, Dr. Smith will perform a thorough check-up of your oral health and discuss with you the treatments you need. Before tooth bleaching can begin, your oral health must be good.
If you opt for Laser tooth whitening in Dr. Smith’s office, you will notice an immediate improvement in your teeth before leaving.
If you want to pursue tooth bleaching at home, Dr. Smith will make for you a special mouthpiece which will fit comfortably into your mouth and hold the bleaching gel. You will return at another visit to have this fitted and receive the home gel. To ensure complete safety, patients must carefully follow the directions given by Dr. Smith as well as use only the take-home materials he gives you. Once the treatment is finished, Dr. Smith will show you before and after photos of the BestSmile® results.
Tooth Whitening Dentistry. Is it medically tested?
Tooth whitening is very safe. The procedure has been available about 15 years and the American Dental Association has approved many tooth whitening products.
Many types of toothpaste, chemicals and other drugstore preparations claim to have the ability to whiten your teeth. But those products can not touch what we can do for you. The safest way to whiten your teeth is to have a Dental Professional evaluate existing tooth conditions and recommend products.
The most common side effect of tooth whitening is that teeth may become temporarily more sensitive to hot and cold foods or fluids. This normally goes away by discontinuing the bleaching process or bleaching in shorter sessions. It is possible that some teeth that were not healthy due to pre-existing conditions may need further dental treatment.
Please don’t hesitate to call Oakridge Center for Laser Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry at 408-224-1133 with any questions you may have about the benefits of tooth whitening.
