What is a Dental Implant, Dr. Smith?
A dental implant is a titanium root form or fixture that is placed into a surgically prepared site in your jaw bone. The body will allow the bone to heal directly to the implant surface so the implant becomes fixed to the jaw and is stronger than the natural tooth. After the healing phase, the implant(s) are fitted with either a crown, bridge or implant denture.
Dr. Smith has been providing implant treatment to patients for more than 20 years. For more information call us at 408 224-1133.
What is the process to evaluate my mouth for dental implants, Dr. Smith?
At the Oakridge Center for Laser, Cosmetic
and Implant Dentistry, we do a complete and
comprehensive evaluation of your existing conditions
to include an oral cancer check, evaluation of
the existing teeth, the bone and gums. Digital
photos are taken of your mouth; Digital X-rays
offer reduced radiation exposure; Diagnostic casts
of your jaws are made and all of this information
is presented to you along with treatment recommendations
at a subsequent consultation appointment.
After accepting treatment, you will be appointed for the surgical placement of the implant(s). You will be well sedated for this visit and the surgery is done with local anesthetic. The time for healing depends on the quality and amount of remaining bone your have. After the healing period, Dr. Smith will then attach the needed dental restoration. The advantage to you is that Dr. Smith is trained in both the surgical and restorative phases of dental implant treatment. This saves you time and money.

How many Dental Implants will I need, Dr. Smith?
I will answer this question after the initial evaluation of your mouth. The answer depends on how many teeth need replacing, the quality of bone and the amount of bone available. Enough dental implants need to be placed so that the restoration placed has the best prognosis for success. You will be presented options that will fit your budget.

I have heard that I need to see an Oral Surgeon and a Restorative Dentist to have my teeth replaced. Is this true, Dr. Smith?
It is important to understand that there is a surgical phase and a restorative phase for dental implant treatment. I have taken post-doctoral courses to be certified to both place and restore dental implants. This provided the basis for my Best Smile® system of dentistry: One Office, One Doctor, Total Treatment.
What I say to patients is to look for a Dentist who can show you many cases of implant treatment that is similar or exactly like you need. I am able to show digital x -rays and digital images of the results of hundreds of patients who have successfully undergone both the surgical and restorative phases of implant treatment with me.

Are there different types of Dental Implants, Dr. Smith?
Since the innovation of dental implant treatment in the United States in 1986, there has come to be one generic type of implant that is most successful. This is the “Endosteal” implant which looks like the root of a tooth. Within this category of implants there are several types that I use depending on your very specific needs and conditions.
